Fadime Karakaş, from WiN YG participated in ICONS 2024, showcasing collaboration and innovation in nuclear security. She shared insights to enhance nuclear security culture globally, emphasizing the value of diverse perspectives in addressing complex challenges in an interconnected world.
In May 2024, the International Conference on Nuclear Security (ICONS 2024) was held at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) headquarters in Vienna, Austria. This prestigious event gathered over 2000 ministers, scientists, high-level officials, and nuclear security experts from around the world. The conference's key themes were Policy and Regulations for nuclear security, Technology and infrastructure for nuclear security prevention, detection, and response, Capacity Building for nuclear security, and Cross-cutting nuclear security topics.
ICONS 2024 was divided into two main segments: a ministerial segment for high-level policy discussions and the adoption of a Ministerial Declaration, and a scientific and technical program featuring specialized sessions on scientific, technical, legal, and regulatory issues related to nuclear security.
Fadime attended ICONS 2024 to present a co-authored paper titled “Incorporating Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in Nuclear Security Culture through Professional Regional Networks.” Her presentation was part of the capacity building for nuclear security theme, where she joined other experts to discuss innovative approaches to enhance nuclear security culture. Fadime’s paper highlighted the significant roles of networks such as the "Black Sea Women in Nuclear Network" (BSWN) and the "Women in Nuclear Central Asia (WINCA) Network." These networks, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration's "Nuclear Security Women" initiative, focus on promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) in the nuclear sector.
As an active member of BSWN, Fadime works alongside professionals not only in the nuclear field but also in the broader Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) sciences. BSWN and similar networks aim to support and guide the younger generation aspiring to pursue careers in these areas. Through mentorship programs and conference participation support, these networks provide valuable opportunities for professional development and networking.
Fadime’s involvement in ICONS 2024 exemplifies the spirit of collaboration and innovation that defines the future of nuclear security. By sharing her insights and experiences, she contributed to the global dialogue on enhancing nuclear security culture through inclusive and equitable practices. Her participation underscores the importance of diverse perspectives in addressing the complex challenges of nuclear security in an increasingly interconnected world.
ICONS 2024 was not just a conference but a convergence of minds dedicated to shaping the future of nuclear security. The event provided a platform for exchanging knowledge, fostering international collaboration, and developing strategies to enhance global nuclear security frameworks. Fadime's presentation on DEIA in nuclear security culture was a testament to the ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and secure nuclear industry.
Through her work with BSWN and her participation in international forums like ICONS 2024, Fadime continues to inspire and empower the next generation of nuclear professionals. Her dedication to promoting diversity and inclusion within the nuclear security sector serves as a beacon for others, highlighting the critical role of professional networks in building a safer and more equitable world.
Fadime’s experience at ICONS 2024 is a compelling story of how individual contributions can drive collective progress in nuclear security. By advocating for DEIA and engaging with global experts, she demonstrates the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing the nuclear security challenges of today and tomorrow.
